Killed for a place to sleep

2012-09-14 00:00

AN argument between homeless people over sleeping spots left a man dead and a woman with serious head injuries yesterday.

A street child found the body of the man and the seriously injured woman in the early hours of the morning on the banks of the Dorpspruit near Greyling Street.

The child noticed their blankets and went to investigate.

As he lifted the blankets he saw the two victims and immediately reported the matter to the police.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane identified the man as Msikwa Njilo (50) and the injured woman as Thandeka Mkhize (26).

He said it was alleged that the victims were sitting around a fire at the scene when an argument over sleeping spots broke out between the couple and two men.

The men left and returned later, picking up rocks and hitting both victims on their heads, fatally wounding the man and seriously injuring the woman.

Mkhize was taken to hospital in a serious condition, said Zwane.

Two men aged 20 and 32 were later arrested at a tavern in East Street.

Police are investigating cases of murder and attempted murder.
