Killed young mother about to start nursing job

2012-04-10 00:00

YOUNG mother Maneli Nene (26), who died with her five-year-old son, Masuwakhe, in an accident in Cato Ridge at the weekend, was about to start work as a nurse at a local clinic.

Her husband, Musa, is still fighting for his life at Edendale Hospital.

The Hammarsdale family were with their friends, driver Sizwe Magubane and his wife.

Nene’s sister-in-law, Thobile Mkhize, said the family does not know where they were going.

“We’re really hurt emotionally, but as the family we’re not pointing fingers at anybody … only those who were in the car know what really happened,” said Mkhize.

She told The Witness that her brother, Musa, is in a critical condition.

“I haven’t been to the hospital or seen him, but I heard he’s badly hurt,” she said.

Nene was supposed to start work next Monday at a local clinic.

Mkhize described her five-year-old nephew as a “bubbly child” and said Nene was a people’s person and very cheerful.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said the three who survived were thrown from the vehicle when it left the road and overturned.

Nene and Masuwakhe were sitting in the back seat.

A culpable homicide case has been opened.

The funeral arrangements are still to be discussed.
