Killer teen wants his own sheets

2014-04-01 00:00

KIMBERLEY — The teenager convicted of murder and rape in the Griekwastad family killings has applied to be able to use his own bedding in prison.

The 17-year-old is being held in the Kimberley prison ahead of his sentencing on May 13.

At the weekend, his guardian visited him there, taking treats and clean clothes.

The boy’s bail was revoked by Northern Cape Judge President Frans Kgomo last week when he convicted the teen of the murders of Deon (44), Christel (43) and Marthella Steenkamp (14) on April 6, 2012 on the family’s farm. He was also convicted of the rape of Marthella.

At his sentencing hearing, the court will consider reports from forensic psychologists, correctional officials and social workers.

The state will also present reports on the impact of the crimes on the family of the deceased and on the community.

Thakane Molatedi, deputy regional Correctional Services commissioner, said the boy’s first night in prison last Thursday, went off without incident. He was referred to a counsellor.

“The boy also ate our lunch and supper and said it was nice,” Molatedi said.

His guardian visited on Sunday, bringing treats and a change of clothes. Visitors are allowed to bring a cooked meal, as well as sweets and toiletries.

For safety reasons, he is being held in a single cell, in line with departmental regulations. He is expected to clean the cell every morning.

His application to have his own bedding, to put on his steel-framed bed and foam mattress, may be granted, because he is not yet a sentenced prisoner.
