Killer ‘was suspected of raping child (2)’

2009-08-13 00:00

AUBREY Nxele, who killed himself after shooting dead his 19-year-old girlfriend and wounding her friend, had threatened to kill both the woman and their two-year-old daughter after he was suspected of raping the child.

The woman’s name is being withheld to protect the identity of the child.

Ntokozo Nene, a friend of Nxele, said that a few weeks before the shooting, the child’s mother suspected that the child had been raped.

“She reported this to the police and tests were done and it was confirmed that the child had been raped, although there was no proof [against] Nxele. When he heard the rumours going around, he apparently threatened to kill both [her] and the child.”

He said Nxele’s threats were not taken seriously because “he was not a violent man”.

Nene said he grew up with Nxele. “I was shocked and surprised that he could do such a horrible thing. We have been playing soccer with him since we were kids. He loved soccer, not violence.”

Nene said the family were watching the television news at 7.30 pm when Nxele knocked on the door. “His girlfriend told the others to open for him, but when he entered he had a gun in his hand and he started firing. Duma [the friend] and [the girlfriend] were hit and thereafter he dragged [the girlfriend] out of the house.”

The two-year-old was sleeping in a bedroom at the time.

Police and ambulances were called and on arrival they found both Nxele and the girlfriend outside. They were both certified dead on the scene. Duma was taken to hospital where her condition is reported to be critical.
