Kitten rides 40?km trapped inside hot engine

2013-10-29 00:00

VERY few cats can claim to have almost lost all nine lives in the chromed engine of a Harley Davidson motorbike.

Four Hog riders from Ladysmith in KwaZulu-Natal yesterday rode about 40 km from Montagu to Barrydale while the little stowaway was trapped in a space inside the hot engine of one of the loud, rumbling bikes.

It was only when they stopped at the Akkerboom Road stall near Barrydale that they heard pitiful mewing from deep inside the Harley. The engine was piping hot and the kitten was clearly in a lot of pain.

Karin Augustyn said the kitten must have crawled into the tiny space above the engine block the previous night. She, her husband Phillip, and two friends were riding to a Harley Davidson gathering in Lamberts Bay.

Phillip and a passing leather craftsman, Izak Havenga, managed to get the kitten out before it succumbed to the heat.

By the time they managed to draw the kitten back out through the tiny hole above the hot engine block, it was in a dead faint. The road stall manager Thelanie Alberts placed the kitten in a box and was to take it to a veterinarian to treat the burn wounds it had suffered.
