Knife gangs: police alert after two robberies

2011-10-12 00:00

POLICE have warned South Coast residents to be extra vigilant when walking on the streets with valuables such as cellphones and cash, especially after dark.

The warning comes after two people were attacked on Monday evening in separate incidents in Umtentweni and Port Shepstone.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said a 29-year-old man lost his finger during a robbery in Commercial Road, Umtentweni, at about 8.30 pm when four men approached and demanded cellphones and cash.

A scuffle ensued and one of the attackers produced a bush knife and chopped off the victim’s middle finger.

In the other incident, which occurred in Bazley Street, Port Shepstone, a 42-year-old woman was stabbed in the hand.

A gang of men approached the woman as she was walking toward the taxi rank.

“They grabbed her handbag but she held on to it,” said Wiid.

One of the men stabbed her in the hand.

The men fled but the knifeman was apprehended by passers-by.

Wiid said police will step up patrols and will conduct searches randomly.
