Knights’ Coetsee stuns the Lions

2014-10-06 00:00

THE Chevrolet Knights captain Werner Coetsee orchestrated the demise of the bizhub Highveld Lions with a superb spell of off-spin bowling as the visitors romped to a comprehensive 143-run win against the Lions at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom yesterday.

The Lions were stunned by Coetsee, who finished with four for 34 in 13.5 overs. The hosts plummeted to 137 all out. Only Thami Tsolekile, with 56 off 77 balls, was able to show meaningful resistance as Coetsee bowled superbly. Tsolekile was the last man out when he attempted an ambitious sweep off Coetsee, and top-edged it to Obus Pienaar at short leg to send the Knights into raptures of joy.

The Lions lost 10 wickets in 43.5 overs and did not play with the grit that characterised the batting performance in the first innings when Tsolekile scored 113 to power them to 368.

The Knights were dismissed for 381 after the lunch interval. Malusi Siboto captured two for 14 in eight overs to rock the middle order.

The Lions resumed on 40 for three after tea. Siboto had the Knights in trouble on the stroke of tea when he had Rassie van der Dussen caught behind for 12.

In his second over after the break he had Temba Bavuma caught at mid-off by Quinton Friend for three as the top-order wobble continued. Kagiso Rabada was run out for three as the Lions were reduced to 130 for nine.

The Knights earned 10 points for the win.
