Knockout night for College, St Charles

2013-02-12 00:00

FOLLOWING a week where there were no Sunfoil cricket matches in the Schools Night Series, it resumes again this afternoon at the Oval, with a match between Maritzburg College and St Charles, joint holders of the trophy, after last year’s final was cut short by rain.

This match is like a knockout contest because the side that loses will almost certainly not reach the final.

Hilton and Michaelhouse have both won their two matches played, with the latter sitting at the top of the table with 10 points after winning both games with a bonus point.

Hilton have nine points with one game won with a bonus point. St Charles and College are both on five points after bonus point wins against the Presidents XI, but a loss in their other game, College against Hilton and St Charles against Michaelhouse.

The Presidents XI have ended their campaign with four losses against the four major schools in the competition.

The big game of the week will be between Hilton and Michaelhouse tomorrow and the winner will then be the favourite to take the title, which could be a repeat of this game.

In the second tier of the competition, the semi-finals of the high schools and primary schools T20 matches, take place on Thursday and Friday afternoons respectively. In the high school section, Treverton will play Howick at 3.30 pm and Weston will play Carter at 7 pm. Rain had an effect on three of the games, with Carter being the one side to win in a full game against Raisethorpe.

The Duckworth/Lewis tables were used for Treverton to beat Wartburg and in Howick’s victory against Voortrekker, while Weston went through on the spin of a coin against Alex.

On matches played to date, it is likely that Howick will play Weston in the final.

In the primary school section, Cordwalles will play Pelham at 3 pm on Friday and later at 6 pm, Winterton will play Scottsville.

Cordwalles and Winterton both won their matches against Merchiston and Laddsworth respectively.

The other two games were both washed out, so Scottsville and Pelham have proceeded after winning the toss against St Charles Prep and the MCA XI respectively. The finalists in the primary section are less clear.
