Knox creams Illovu MTB challenge

2012-08-06 00:00

ESTON — Amid a massive field of well over 3 000 riders it was renowned national ace Max Knox who surged to the front of the pack early on in the 60 km Illovo Marathon, the feature race of the Illovo Eston MTB Challenge.

The Mpumalanga-based star didn’t look back as he cruised to victory, while Brenda Potts (Enviroshore) claimed a somewhat surprising win in the women’s encounter yesterday.

A rapid start was expected and despite his bout of ’flu just days before the race, it was defending champion Brandon Stewart who led the charge over the first few kilometres.

Stewart was forced to retire at the 22 km mark, leaving the door wide open for Knox and the rest of the chasers to battle it out for the top honours.

Knox applied the pressure and as the rest of the field fell by the wayside a brave effort from Neil MacDonald saw him stay with the leader for most of the way before Knox’s relentless pressure eventually took its toll three-quarters of the way through and it was a one-man show from there.

After falling off Knox’s wheel, MacDonald dug deep to ensure the group of four behind him didn’t spoil his party any further and a solid grind by the Gauteng resident saw him cross the line in a deserved second spot.

In what has been labelled a shock result by many it was Hillcrest’s Brenda Potts — recently sidelined by reconstructive surgery on her shoulder — who powered home to a narrow victory over Nedene Cahill, Ashleigh Parker-Morratt, Natalie Bergstrom and Bridgette Stewart.
