Kudu bull rescued after being found injured at Umgeni Water

2010-09-09 00:00

FOR a change, a wild animal was rescued by kind-hearted people after it presumably injured itself yesterday morning.

An injured young kudu bull was found on the premises of the Umgeni Water Board in Mkondeni.

Local businessman and wild animals expert Mark Enslin said he was called by the SPCA, which informed him of the injured animal.

Enslin said the animal is from the wild, but it is not clear how it came to be on the premises.

He said it must have strayed into the area, jumping fences and hurting itself in the process.

“We found it lying on the ground, stunned and injured. It was also bleeding through the nose, so I think it must have knocked its head against a solid object.

“We called a veterinarian to assess it and fortunately we didn’t have to take the option of putting it down.

“It was sedated and loaded on the bakkie and sent to a wild animal sanctuary nearby.”

Enslin said the experience was positive, in contrast to recent reports of animals being mutilated at the hands of poachers and ruthless and unprofessional, unlicensed hunters.
