KwaMashu woman gives birth to twins on side of highway

TWO young girls born yesterday will have an interesting story to tell about their birthplace.

The twins, who are yet to be named, were born on the side of the N2 in Durban yesterday morning.

Their mother, Ntombenhle Nzuza of KwaMashu, was on her way to hospital when she went into labour and gave birth on the side of the road.

The twins bring the number of Nzuza’s children to seven.

She said: “This was a frightening experience because with all my children I have always made it to the clinic or the hospital.

“This was the first time I have given birth on the side of the road.”

Nzuza (38) said that at about 3 am yesterday she started experiencing labour cramps. She got up and prepared herself and hired a car to take her to the hospital.

“We were on our way to the hospital when we reached the Umgeni Road and I realised that the babies were coming.

“We pulled off of the road and I got out of the car.”

Right there, on the side of the road, she gave birth to her twin girls.

“Fortunately I had asked a neighbour to accompany me to the hospital; she helped me give birth.

“It was a great relief that I had her with me.

“The only other person that was there was the driver of the car and he helped by calling the ambulance,” said Nzuza.

ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said paramedics arrived at the scene to find Nzuza sitting on the verge.

“They assisted her in the rest of the birth on the side of the road, making sure mother and twin baby girls were in good health.

“They transported mother and babies to King Edward Hospital in a stable condition where the maternity staff took over the medical care,” Banks added.
