Kyle’s dad is not counting his chickens

KYLE Abbott’s father, Neil, is proud of his son’s call-up to the Proteas squad for the vital third and deciding Test against Australia, but he hasn’t booked his flight to Cape Town just yet.

“Of course, you share the moment, but after last time, we appreciate how the system works and it basically comes down to waiting your turn,” he said.

That last time was the Boxing Day Test against India at Kingsmead last year, when there was a strong possibility Kyle would play.

In the end, he was left out and Neil is not counting his chickens before they hatch.

“We were in Namibia then, near the Kunene River when he called us. It took us five days to get back to Durban and he didn’t play,” said Neil. “At least we saw a great Test and said cheers to Jacques Kallis.”

However, Neil appreciates the hard work that goes into reaching Test match status. “It is quite something and you really understand the work, effort, time and pressure that makes it happen.

“We will book tickets to Cape Town nearer the time, as we are never sure if Kyle has made it over the line into the team. Meanwhile, we will keep our phones handy and wait for confirmation that he will be playing.”
