LA-bound: Lira nominated for top U.S. award

AWARD-WINNING singer Lira has been nominated for a prestigious U.S. Black Entertainment Television (BET) Award in the Best International Act: Africa category.

She will be competing against Sarkodie (Ghana), Camp Mulla (Kenya), Ice Prince (Nigeria), Mokobe (Mali) and Wizkid (Nigeria) at the ceremony in the Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles, on July 1.

Billed as “Too Big To Miss”, the ceremony will be hosted by actor Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers) in a departure from years past when comedians like Mo’Nique and Kevin Hart hosted the show.

BET’s president of music programming and specials, Stephen G. Hill, said: “We are massively excited about having Sam Jackson, the world’s biggest box office star, host the BET Awards. His wit, presence and gigantic personality are the perfect match for our show.”

During the ceremony, the members of Maze will receive the Cadillac Lifetime Achievement Award and Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj will perform. Among the music nominees are Beyonce, Rihanna and Mary J. Blige in the category Best Female R and B artist; Chris Brown, Bruno Mars, Trey Songz and Usher in the Best Male R and B category; Drake, J Cole and Lil Wayne in the Best Male hip-hop category; and Nicki Minaj for Best Female hip-hop artist. Acting nominees include Angela Bassett, Viola Davis, Taraji P Henson, Regina King and Zoe Saldana for Best Actress; and Don Cheadle, Common, Idris Elba, Kevin Heart and Denzel Washington for Best Actor. Nominated for Best Movie are Good Deeds, Jumping the Broom, Laugh at My Pain, Red Tails and The Help. The ceremony will be screened on BET (TopTV channel 190) at 8 pm on July 3. — Arts Editor.
