Lack of guards for DA ‘absurd’

2013-05-21 00:00

FAILURE by kwaDukuza’s municipal manager, Nhlanhla Mdakane, to provide security for a Democratic Alliance councillor was disturbing, the DA leader in KZN, Sizwe Mchunu, said yesterday.

The Witness reported yesterday that councillor Thokozani Gumede started receiving death threats three months ago.

It was reported that the police crime intelligence conducted a report on Gumede, who is in hiding, and recommended that the municipality provide him with security guards.

But Mdakane has not tabled the report to the full council for a decision and questioned the report in correspondence with the police, saying it contained no evidence that Gumede’s life was at risk.

Mchunu said Mdakane’s move was disturbing.

“It reflects badly on a municipal manager who somersaults on a matter that is so urgent,” he said.

Mchunu said the DA wrote to Mdakane two weeks ago asking when he would act on the crime intelligence report, but it had yet to receive a response.

He said the party would take the matter up with Community Safety MEC Willies Mchunu and Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Nomusa Dube.

DA shadow minister for police Dianne Kohler-Barnard said it was “absurd” that their councillor was not provided with security when councillors of other parties in the same municipality were.

Mchunu complained that DA activists had been attacked and stabbed in the province by people associated with an opposition party.

“It is disturbing for us,” he said.

He said political leaders needed to be responsible for their utterances and encouraged party members to refrain from attacks that endangered the lives of others.

Captain Thulani Zwane said police investigations were under way and that no arrests had been made.
