FIFTEEN schools from KwaZulu-Natal took part in the annual Smythe Trophy at Kershaw Park on Saturday.

There was an increase in the number of participants, with 24 doubles combinations entering the tournament. Danville Park returned the trophy after winning it consecutively over the past two years.

In the A section, the battle for the top positions was between St Anne’s and Durban Girls’ College, Epworth I and The Wykeham Collegiate II, TWC I and Lady of Fatima I, St Mary’s I and Epworth II. In the B section, Treverton I, Hillcrest, Wembley and TWC Invitational contested for the top place.

The cross-pool play-offs proved to be extremely tough with a number of matches going into tie-breaker sets. It was Sarah Mayne and Hannah Power from Epworth playing for the number one position against Samantha Schnell and Kendal Gorlei from Lady of Fatima.

The Fatima girls cleaned up the day, winning all their matches to deservedly take the Smythe title for 2014.

In the B section, an exciting final was played between Anja Kanzler and Kate Armitage from Treverton and a late replacement team, TWC Invitational, comprising Grace Grant and Yasha Nair. The TWC team, in an epic battle, narrowly defeated the Treverton girls.
