Ladysmith: Main supply dam dry

2008-09-10 00:00

THE effects of drought were evident in Ladysmith this week when one of the area’s major dams, the Kliprivier dam, dried up. Residents were without water on Tuesday.

According to uThukela District municipality spokesman, Archie Khumalo, the district gets water from two dams. “We have two water sources in the district, the Zakheni water works and the Kliprivier. On Tuesday, the Kliprivier dried up. However we were aware that it would dry out.”

Khumalo said residents were warned of the interruptions in water supply and that measures were put in place to recover from the drought. “We tried to get water from the Spienkop dam, but we discovered that one of the pumps had broken down. So we had to order new parts.”

He said water supply would be back by yesterday evening.
