Ladysmith: Suspected car thief arrested

2013-02-07 00:00

A SUSPECTED car theft syndicate member was arrested in Lyell Street, Ladysmith, by the area police on Tuesday.

The man, who police said could not be identified for fear of jeopardising the investigation, was allegedly on his way to deliver a vehicle that was reported stolen in Durban.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said the suspect was lured to Ladysmith by the police after a lengthy surveillance.

He said the man was found in possession of an illegal firearm and suspect documentation.

Zwane said 24 vehicles valued at about R3 million had been recovered over two months, with no fewer than 12 people arrested and charged.

Two of the suspects had since been found guilty of possession of suspected stolen property.

Zwane advised people not to buy vehicles at very low prices because they were likely to have been stolen.

The commander of the Ladysmith Vehicle Identification Section, Lieutenant-Colonel Khumalo, warned that anyone found with a suspected stolen vehicle risked being arrested and charged.
