Ladysmith: United face top teams for Mayoral Cup

2011-08-05 00:00

MARITZBURG United will participate in the annual Uthukela Mayoral Cup involving two other top-flight sides and a local selection squad at Settlers Park in Ladysmith on Sunday.

At the tournament’s launch Maritzburg’s commercial brand manager, Younus Kadodia, said they will use the Mayoral Cup to test their players.

“We will participate not only to win, but also to look for young players whom we will sign for the future. We are aware that tournaments of this nature always provide teams like ours with a chance to get a glimpse of skilled but rough diamonds, and we won’t hesitate to sign a quality player if we identify one,” he said.

AmaZulu publicist Philani Mabaso said that this was not just a pre-season tournament.

“The fact that we will play during the same MTN8 weekend gives us an opportunity to get competitive football like those teams that will be participating in the MTN8 Cup. It’s crucial to begin the season on a similar scale … because that gives us equal opportunity to do well during the course of the season,” he said.

Uthukela Mayor Dudu Mazibuko said his council has put aside R1 million for the tournament. The winner takes home R40 000 and runner-up will receive R30 000.

The draw: Uthukela Squad vs Maritzburg United, first semi-final, 9 am; AmaZulu vs Jomo Cosmos, second semi-final, noon). The final is pencilled in for 3 pm.
