Ladysmith crash kills toddler

TWO people died and at least three others were critically injured in road accidents in KwaZulu-Natal yesterday.

An accident that happened in Ladysmith claimed the lives of a one-year-old child and a female passenger when a VW Polo they were travelling in hit a truck from behind.

“Other passengers, the driver of the Polo and a four-year-old are in a critical condition,” said Transport Department spokesman Bhekisisa Mncube.

A male pedestrian is in a critical condition after he was knocked by a truck while trying to cross the N2 yesterday. Mncube said he was taken to Prince Mshiyeni Hospital.

On Tuesday, three men were injured when the bakkie they were travelling in rolled over on Chatsworth’s Higginson Highway.

Netcare911 spokesman Jeff Wicks said that the cause of the incident and how it happened is unknown.

“It is thought that the driver of a double-cab bakkie lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a bend. The vehicle left the road and collided with a tree, breaking into three pieces.

“All three men were taken to hospital in a civilian vehicle prior to the arrival of Netcare911 paramedics,” Wicks said.
