Lake Eland: New mile-long race before Midmar

2012-08-13 00:00

THE South Coast is to host its first mile-long open swimming race, two months before the Midmar Mile.

The November 4 mile-long race will replace the 1 000 m swim at Lake Eland.

As usual, the day’s races will include a 3 000 m event, which is a Swim South Africa qualifier.

“We decided to host a mile race due to popular demand,” said Samantha Botha, spokesperson for the Margate Swimming Club, which organises the swim.

“We see it as complementing the Midmar Mile. Many people may want to enter it to see if they’re up to doing the Midmar Mile later on.”

Club chairperson “PJ” Botha said negotiations were under way to have the Lake Eland Mile recognised as a seeding event for the Midmar Mile.

In 2010, the Lake Eland race had this status, he said.

This year’s Lake Eland swim will also have special 500 m and mile races for disabled and junior swimmers.

The event will raise funds for both the Margate Swimming Club and for the training of disabled swimmers at the St Martin de Porres School in Port Shepstone.
