Lancaster makes six changes for PE Test

2012-06-22 00:00

NAUGHTY boy Danny Care and James Haskell have been recalled to a new-look England team to face the Springboks in tomorrow evening’s third Test in Port Elizabeth.

Coach Stuart Lancaster, in making six changes in personnel, has named a far more confrontational starting line-up as England go in search of a face-saving win after their losses at King’s Park and Ellis Park.

Scrumhalf Care was dropped by Lancaster after a series of alcohol-related disciplinary incidents, while flank Haskell has been playing Super Rugby for the Highlanders. Care has been selected ahead of Lee Dickson, while Haskell takes over from impressive captain Chris Robshaw, who has been sidelined by a broken thumb. Alex Goode earns his first full cap at fullback, with Ben Foden returning to wing with David Strettle axed.

Lancaster, impressed by England’s strong finish in the second Test in Johannesburg, and the impact of the replacements, has also included number eight Thomas Waldron, prop Alex Corbisiero and lock Tom Palmer.

Palmer replaces South Africa-born lock Mouritz Botha and New Zealander Waldrom takes over from Ben Morgan in the back row, while Corbisiero, over his series of injuries, takes over from Joe Marler at loosehead.

“I am really pleased for Alex [Goode],” Lancaster said yesterday. “He has worked hard in training and has been pushing Mike Brown [injured] and Ben Foden so we are looking forward to him bringing his footballing skills to this Test.

“Danny Care, likewise, has bided his time in a very competitive position, knuckled down and deserves his chance, as has James Haskell, who has played this season for the Highlanders at number seven.

“We felt that the pack got some momentum in the second half last week so we have gone for Alex Corbisiero and Tom Palmer.”

Former Sharks centre Brad Barritt, who needed stitches in a cut eyeball after the first Test, returns on the bench.
