Last game at Woodburn

2009-12-19 00:00

TOMORROW’S Premier Soccer League game between Maritzburg United and Moroka Swallows will mark a nostalgic occasion for United fans — it will be the last to be played by the PMB team at the comfortable, cosy Woodburn Stadium.

For a year-and-a-half, since the beginning of the 2008/09 PSL season, United have used Woodburn as their home ground while Harry Gwala Stadium was being renovated. While there have been delays in officially opening Harry Gwala, the stadium is expected to be ready for use once the PSL resumes from a month-long break that follows tomorrow’s game against Swallows.

United fans have developed some affection for Woodburn, where some famous victories have been notched up and some exciting matches played, including last season’s thriller in front of a packed house where Orlando Pirates beat the Team of Choice 2-1 thanks to a last-minute headed goal by Bucs captain Lucas Thwala.

The Midlands Rugby Sub-Union deserves countless praise for the manner in which it has opened its arms to its soccer neighbours, and thanks from the football fraternity for helping keep PSL soccer in Pietermaritzburg.
