Legendary ‘ghazals’ and ‘bhajans’ maestro to perform in PMB

2012-05-08 00:00

PIETERMARITZBURG lovers of ghazals and bhajans will be in for a rare treat when the internationally acclaimed maestro of ghazals and bhajans, Anup Jalota, performs a live concert at the YMCA in Alan Paton Road on May 14 at 7 pm.

Ram Maharaj, of the South African Hindu Sabha, said the Pietermaritzburg venture had been made possible by the efforts of DStv Indian, Raido Hindvani, Rising Sun and Serendipity Tours.

In the past, international artistes have by-passed Pietermaritzburg because of the lack of support, and Maharaj has promised to feature more international artistes in the capital.

Jalota sleeps, eats and drinks music. He started his musical career on All India Radio as a chorus singer, and was later awarded the Bhajan Samrat of India.

He has released many albums that have turned gold and platinum and has created world records. He has been a playback singer in many Hindi, Gujarati and Bengali films.

Accompanying him will be Shashika Mooruth, who now resides in Mumbai and has performed in more than 25 countries. Her voice, with its unique timbre, is her passport to much acclaim.

The concert proceeds will go towards the Feed the Hungry programme.

Tickets range from R50 to R300, and can be bought at Computicket, Shoprite Checkers stores, Maharaj Prayer Goods, Premier Services Raisethorpe and Popatlall Kara.
