Let me pay: Speedster Cliff vexed at trail delay

2012-03-08 00:00

GARETH Cliff, the Idols judge and a morning host on 5FM, said it was the fault of the media that he could not enter into a plea bargain with the state after he was arrested yesterday evening for speeding on a Pretoria highway.

Cliff told Beeld at the magistrate’s court in Centurion yesterday that the intense media interest in his case had stopped any chance of a simple and quick plea bargain.

The deejay was on his way home after co-judging an Idols recording in Durban when he was arrested for driving 182 km/h in a 120 km/h zone in his Range Rover Evoque.

The Lyttelton police released him on R1 500 bail and warned him to appear in the Centurion court yesterday morning. However, the case was postponed and transferred to the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.

Cliff said the reason for the transfer was that the media had run around at the CBD court and “caused chaos”.

He said he had the right to pay an admission of guilt fine and thought the case could be finished by yesterday.

After his appearance Cliff said the court process has to take its course, but he was vexed because it would take a lot of time.

He said he would not have been in this position if he hadn’t been speeding, and admitted it had been stupid to drive so fast.

Before his court appearance he changed his Twitter profile photo to that of the The Stig, the well-known racer on Top Gear.
