Let's embrace th Spanish soapfest

2011-04-20 00:00

SO it has come to this.

By some beautiful twist of fate, we are going to see so much of Real Madrid and Barcelona over the next few weeks, it will feel like SuperSport is running a Spanish soap-opera special.

Something like Isidingo meets GQ, with an over-zealous bunch of referees throwing cards around like wedding invitations.

Don’t think for a second that I am complaining. Heck, this is a bit like watching reruns of your favourite TV show — but only better, because each new episode holds the promise of yet more mind games from the Special One and even more diski delights from the Special Team.

Barcelona’s football is so ridiculously beautiful that it has even compelled Real Madrid’s honorary president to say that it is a pleasure to watch.

Jose Mourinho would not have liked that one prickly bit.

Just imagine that for a second.

Your wife, upon seeing you and a mate braai meat together, tells you — publicly, may I add — that your buddy’s chops taste that much juicier.

And ladies, we won’t leave you out of this.

Imagine if hubby, as you swan out of the salon, dares to utter that your friend’s hair cut …

Hmm, actually, this is dangerous territory. I would hate to rekindle domestic dramas just to make a point about four “El Clasicos” rolled into 18 magical days, so I will veer well clear of errors that no man worth his braai-vleis boep would make.

Now, back to this prolonged tussle between the Madridistas and the Barca boys.

The league is obviously headed to the Nou Camp, which makes it even more important for Real to win tonight’s King’s Cup final.

I have a sneaky suspicion that Mourinho’s sheer force of personality will land him a trophy this season. With the league already being polished for the Barcelona parade, that leaves the spoils from tonight — or the Champions League. He has ruffled feathers, as he always does, but he has also started to leave his DNA on this Madrid side.

They will be desperate to win for him; to win for all Madridistas.

And as much as I enjoy Zeb and his wacky ways, I know which soapie will have my full attention over the next few weeks.
