Letter: Igesund headline was in poor taste

2009-11-13 00:00

IT was with utter disbelief that I read the the front page headline in bold, “Get out, Gordon!”, referring to the departure of Gordon Igesund as coach of Maritzburg United. Not only as a reader, but a subcriber of The Witness, it was in my humble opinion in very poor taste. The headline could have been placed more accurately and in a manner that would have made it more understandable to the readers. The article to a large degree informed the the readers of the reasons why Igesund departed from Maritzburg United as head coach.

The picture of a disillusioned-looking coach who was revered a few months ago as “The Messiah” caused disappointment. Igesund didn’t deserve departure in this manner. More so, it also reflected a negative view of the club directors. Chairman Farouk Kadodia and his board must have taken this painful decision of parting ways with Igesund after much thought. As always, they have the best interests of the club at heart. The headline gave an impression that the directors brutally kicked Igesund out.

When dealing with a human’s emotional feeling, sensationalism might sell a few more copies of the paper, but the bitter taste lingers on long after. Having said this, to the paper’s credit, through the vast and at most times excellent pre- and post-match reporting in the sports section of The Witness, United enjoy enormous coverage.
