Librarian scoops award for Clarendon Primary

2007-12-07 00:00

This means that the school has the best library in the primary urban central setting in KZN — and the person behind it all is Julie Dawson.

Dawson has been the school’s librarian for 13 years and has won the award for the second time since 2004.

She said the judging criteria are based on how a library is used and managed, including the extent of networking formed with other libraries. “The purpose of a library and media centre is not only meant to develop research skills and to encourage language and reading, but it is also meant to equip the children to be critical thinkers and to judge what they are reading. And many of us forget that,” she said.

She said as a society, we are far removed from the culture of story telling and parents no longer have time to sit and talk with their children to develop language, which is why libraries are so important.

“It’s like the world comes to them and they become exposed to the greater world of knowledge that is necessary for their success. And if we are to successfully implement the Outcome Based Education, it is imperative we provide resources for teachers to develop not just mechanical readers, but independent readers.”

According to Dawson, libraries should be links and extensions of what happens in the classroom.
