Libyans ‘very good’ to trapped kzn women

2011-02-25 00:00

THE local business woman stranded in a hotel in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, said they could remain in the country until the end of the month and beyond.

Busisiwe Kheswa told The Witness yesterday that an official from the South African embassy in Libya had told her and her sister Hlengiwe Skhosana that the airport in Tripoli is still shut down and no aircraft are being allowed to land in any other airport in Libya.

“The official told us that even if the airport was to be re-opened, it would not be possible for SA to send an aircraft to Tripoli because the proximity is too far.

“He said they are negotiating with countries like Rome and the U.S. to take us with them so that we can board planes from those countries back to SA,” said Kheswa.

She said they were given strict instructions to remain inside the hotel and stay as warm as possible as it has been cold in Libya in the past few days.

“We were told that getting medication was a mission as it was imported and that even [an aspirin] is hard to get. At least people at the hotel are very good to us and they do everything within their power to help us,” she said.

Skhosana said she is worried about her family and children. Her husband phoned her yesterday morning and assured her that everything will be fine.
