Life terms for farm attack duo

2014-11-18 00:00

TWO men who bludgeoned Underberg forester Dan Knight to death were jailed for life by Judge Jerome Mnguni in the Pietermaritzburg High Court yesterday.

The men, Tsepiso Ramongale (28) and Bonginkosi Nyawose (33), of Bulwer, pleaded not guilty at the start of the trial.

In addition to the life sentences for murder they were also handed 15 years for the aggravated robberies of Knight (56) and of his long-time partner, Beth Bucher.

The attack was planned by the assailants who armed themselves with a firearm, knives and a heavy hammer that was used to bash in Knight’s head after he was tied up in October last year.

Bucher, who was also trussed up by the assailants, heard one attacker threaten to kill Knight saying: “Dan Knight we have come for money and guns.”

He was then asked for a key to his safe.

Knight said that there was no money and he offered to write them a cheque, which they refused.

Mnguni said that such attacks on farmers, who are essential in providing food and other essentials for the country, harm the economy.

Knight’s former workers are now jobless and Bucher, who had a firewood business and employed workers, has left the area.
