Lifeguards fired for 22-day strike

2012-11-30 00:00

STRIKING Tower 13 lifeguards were fired yesterday for participating in an unprotected strike for 22 days.

According to attorneys Barry Botha & Breytenbach, who represented Tower 13s’ owner Leon Garbade, some of the 31 strikers who were fired asked to be re-employed just hours after they were jobless.

Each case will be dealt with on an individual basis though.

The attorneys said in a statement: “All beaches on Hibiscus Coast are fully manned with qualified lifeguards. The employee, Tower 13 CC, has had an influx of prospective employees from individuals who have recently qualified. They now have a surplus of lifeguards employed at their disposal.”

The spokesperson for the lifeguards, who asked to remain anonymous, warned that they would now have to take the next step since “nobody was interested in them”. “The Hibiscus Coast Municipality has made it clear that they do not want to hear what we have to say since they deal with Tower 13 and not us. So now we will have to take another step, but I am not prepared to say what that is,” he said.
