Life’s tough choices

2011-05-25 00:00

I WAS very excited to get a novel by Rayda Jacobs as I thoroughly loved Confessions of a Gambler. This novel was different but just as enjoyable and provocative. It is an exceptional story about a woman’s passage from childhood through to her older years.

From the moment you are introduced to Joonie you like her and as you trail her life’s story you learn many precious lessons like how a simple choice with a wrong decision can turn the entire course of your life around.

Joonie hails from Grassy Park in Cape Town and we are introduced to her parents and enigmatic, fun granny. She is an intelligent girl with a promising future, and then she gets pregnant. The choices she makes thereafter take her to the United States and lead to her finding out some startling truths about her life.

The story is set during apartheid, so she cannot be with the father of her child due to the laws overriding mixed relationships. He is white and she is coloured. Joonie’s journey is hard with a lot of challenges and what resonated in my soul was the amazing resilient strength of a woman. I kept on thinking to myself: “wow, I know so many women who have had similar experiences and made similar choices and have emerged out of it stronger and yet broken.”

I hope that every woman out there will read this novel just to understand why we do the things we do and also how we cannot judge anyone.

Although, I must admit that the character did frustrate me at times and I kept on thinking, she is silly, but as I said, by the end of the novel you accept and understand that in life there are many choices and we cannot question why others make the choices they do.
