Lift death: tech charged with culpable homicide

2013-07-02 00:00

A LIFT technician appeared in court yesterday in connection with the death of an employee at a Merrivale SuperSpar last week.

Ronnie Williams, said to be in his late 40s, appeared at the Howick court in connection with the death of Lucinda Eksteen and has been charged with culpable homicide.

Eksteen (21), an employee at the Merrivale SuperSpar, was killed when she stepped into a goods lift that was under maintenance at the store.

It is alleged that as she was entering, the cable holding the lift snapped, hit her on the head and dragged her inside as it went crashing down to the basement floor. The young woman was killed instantly.
