Limpopo’s shocking condom statistics

2008-03-01 00:00

Polokwane — If you live in Limpopo’s Mopani district, you may not be able to have safe sex more than twice a year.

According to the 2008 national health review, there are only two condoms per individual per year in the district, which includes Tzaneen, Modjadjiskloof, Phalaborwa, Giyani, Hoedspruit and surrounds.

Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) chairman Zackie Achmat accused Limpopo of not taking the fight against HIV/Aids seriously. "It’s shocking that there are only two condoms per individual per year in Mopani. The province needs to create a proper strategic plan to distribute condoms …," he said.

He said the TAC requested a meeting with Limpopo MEC for health and social development, Seaparo Sekoati, to address this matter.

"The department is taking decisions on their own. They are even failing to co-operate with non-governmental organisations in the province when dealing with matters of HIV/Aids," he said.

Achmat said the HIV prevalence rate in the province increased by five percent in the past few years. Two years ago, the prevalence rate was 15%, but is now 21,5%, according to TAC figures.
