Lions down Sharks, Griquas stun Free State

2011-08-29 00:00

THE Lions and Griquas made significant Currie Cup advances at home on Saturday as they downed the Sharks and the Free State in tightly fought contests.

The Lions stretched their lead at the top of the log to five points with their 28-19 win over the title-holding Sharks (see page 20) while Griquas fought back from 20-9 down with 10 minutes remaining to win 23-20 in Kimberley.

The Cheetahs led 14-9 at half-time following tries from flyhalf Sias Ebersohn and scrumhalf Pieter van Zyl, and appeared to be coasting when entering the final quarter, but two superb individual efforts, by new Sharks signing and man of the match Riaan Viljoen and centre Jean Stemmet, resulted in tries and turned the game on its head.

In the two games played on Friday night the Blue Bulls held off a late charge from the Leopards to earn their third straight win with a 28-20 victory in Rustenburg, while Western Province’s 24-13 win over the Pumas in Witbank drew them level with the Sharks on the Currie Cup log.
