Lions snatch win from Sharks

2013-06-22 00:00

THE Sharks, again battered by injury, went down 33-29 to a last minute Golden Lions’ try in their friendly at Ellis Park last night.

The Sharks, taking their scoring chances clinically in the first half, ran in three tries to lead 19-7 at the break.

But the Lions took control in the second half, dominating territory, possession and the scrum to run in four tries and snatch a late win against a brave but disrupted Sharks outfit.

The Sharks had started well with Butch James looking in good touch at flyhalf and Louis Ludik making an immediate impact at outside centre. But the Sharks became progressively more ragged as the injury toll and penalty count mounted.

Prop Wiehahn Herbst left after half-an-hour with what appeared to be a serious knee injury, James departed in the 45th minute to a damaged rib, and impressive lock Jandre Marais (knee) limped off in the closing minutes.

But it was the Sharks’ poor scrummaging in the second half that ultimately cost them as time and again they were pushed off the ball.

What was also worrying was the continued poor form of battling captain Keegan Daniel who conceded penalties and possession and was yellow-carded in the first half with the Lions immediately winning a penalty try against the retreating, seven-man Sharks scrum for the first points of the game.

The Sharks hit back impressively as Ludik’s incisive breaks resulted in tries for first fullback Riaan Viljoen and then prop Dale Chadwick while centre Heimar Williams scored the third after just 28 minutes (19-7).

But the Sharks spent the second half on defence as their scrum crumbled and they came within a minute of holding on for an unlikely win.
