Liquideep: A highly acclaimed house duo perform tonight

2013-05-31 00:00

MTV BASE and Klipdrift Premium Urban Smooth Sessions is heading for the Cube nightclub in Umhlanga for the first time tonight, where it will be host to various bands, vocalists and DJs from around the country.

One of the must-see acts is Liquideep, a soulful house duo hailing from Johannesburg.

Liquideep is made up of singer-songwriter-producer Ziyon and DJ-producer Ryzor, who have sold over five million records worldwide.

The duo met in 2007 at a party, but it was only a year later that they started working together and have since produced three highly acclaimed albums. Their latest album, Welcome Aboard, was released at the end of April.

“So far people have said that they love what they hear,” said Ryzor.

“We take a different route in this album. It is our take on house music. We do a lot of collaborations with different artists, such as Ice Prince and Khuli Chana, and we include a few live instrumentals to make it very diverse.”

The duo have gone through some big changes in the three years since their last album, one of which was a decision to leave Universal Records for their own label, Mentalwave Records.

“Universal didn’t see us as individual artists, but instead as part of a label. We wanted to start our own thing, and we wanted to work with similar artists and other labels such as Soul Candy. To do this we had to leave the record label.

“Working under our own label is a bit risky, but it gives us the freedom to be artists. Artistry is all about self-expression. With our own label, we can do what we want to and in a space where we feel comfortable.

“We are more than happy with our decision and the future is looking bright for us. The trend at the moment is to work for yourself. You just need to believe in your art and take it from there,” said Ryzor.

The MTV Base and Klipdrift Premium Urban Smooth Sessions will be an exciting night as it is the first time that Liquideep will be performing its new act.

“Friday will be the first performance where we do something completely new. We are playing with a lot of visuals. We just want to add more to what people have already seen,” said Ryzor.

The duo have been looking to expand their reach outside the continent. Having already won over Portugal on their last tour, they plan on performing in the United States and Europe.

“We realise that live performances are what people are really interested in, so we want to up the show and create a spectacle around the live performance. We are experimenting with a whole lot of new technologies that we can use at our shows, and especially overseas shows, to add to the ambiance of the music,” said Ryzor.

Tonight you can expect a completely new show with the same Liguideep house sounds that pushed this duo into the forefront of South African house music. We are excited that our sound is changing. As artists, we think that it is necessary to change for the music to be preserved,” said Ryzor.

Also on the bill are Nandi Mngoma, Zakes Bantwini and DJs Benny Maverick, C’Ndo and Shimza. Tickets cost R100. Doors open at 9 pm.
