Litter mountain moving

2014-08-19 00:00

PRESTBURY residents are happy that the mountain of rubbish piled on the corner of Neville Road is being cleared away.

Citizens who happened to pass by the huge amounts of waste were confused as to whether the rubbish was being removed from the area or being dumped there intentionally.

Upon investigation, it was found that the Msunduzi Housing Association had begun clearing out the rubbish that had accumulated between the houses in the area. The mountain of waste was a result of the association clearing the rubbish from the area before taking it to the local dump.

The association was donated 50 houses by the municipality as part of the Gardens Road Scheme in 2002. These houses are now in the process of being transferred to them.

Ivor Caldecott, CEO of the Msunduzi Housing Association, said they have taken responsibility for cleaning the two lanes that traverse the scheme.

“These lanes are municipal property, but have been unkempt for the best part of 15 years,” said Caldecott.

Residents of the area say the dirt stinks and has attracted many pests such as bees, flies and rats.

“We have had machines working for two weeks and are in the process of arranging for tipper trucks to collect the now stockpiled litter,” said Caldecott. He apologised for the current state of the area. “We can assure you of our best intentions.”
