'Little Rock' survived rape, immolation, but not a school taxi

2010-08-26 00:00

ONE of the victims was identified as Liezel August, a girl from Eerste River who was raped and set alight in 2007. The community later christened her Little Rock for her determination.

Her mother, Ingrid August, was in a severe state of shock and received support from family and friends at the scene.

Parents and community members rushed to the scene as news of the crash spread.

Kuils River group police chief Brigadier Sharon Jephta brought all the parents of the children who were in the taxi to a house nearby, where they received counselling before identifying their children’s bodies at Tygerberg hospital mortuary.

One parent said he had to identify his child by his school uniform, since his body was so badly torn apart.

The police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.

Meanwhile, President Jacob Zuma, who is on a state visit to China, expressed his condolences to the families of the nine children. He and Transport Minister S’bu Ndebele wished the injured children a speedy recovery, and reminded drivers to be careful at level crossings over railway lines.
