Live aid: Blind to have special stadium seats

2010-06-14 00:00

BLIND and visually impaired fans will be able to enjoy a special live match experience during the 2010 World Cup.

Six stadiums will each have 15 seats equipped with headphones, and trained commentators will report live on the action.

In addition, each of the six stadiums will have 15 seats allocated for sighted guides, while specially trained volunteers will provide assistance at the stadiums.

The initiative, launched by the Swiss National Association for the Blind and the South African National Council for the Blind (SANCB), and financially supported by Fifa, is aimed at making the tournament accessible to all. Fifa partner Sony is providing the transmitters free.

SANCB is ensuring tickets are fairly allocated. Only a limited number are still available for 19 matches via www.sancb.org.za

Stadiums offering the service are: Johannesburg’s Soccer City (eight matches) and Ellis Park (seven matches); Tshwane/Pretoria’s Loftus Versfeld (six matches); Durban’s Moses Mabhida (seven matches); Port Elizabeth’s Nelson Mandela Bay (eight matches); Cape Town’s Green Point (eight matches).
