Local Stonebridge race marks 1860 Diwali, as world celebrates the original marathon

2010-10-29 00:00

THE running world celebrates the original marathon in Athens on Sunday when thousands of runners will cover the original course from the plains of Marathon through to Athens in the footsteps of Pheidippides.

The Comrades Marathon, Two Oceans and the Weekend Witness Pietermaritzburg marathon are amongst the races from around the world represented at the expo and the AIMs congress being held in Athens at the same time.

The only local road race is the Stonebridge 20 km and 10 km, which will start and finish at the school in Siphosethu road on Sunday at 6 am. This covers an interesting but hilly course with both races sharing the initial relatively flat lap through the Mount Edgecombe Golf Estate area. The 10 km is also open to runners and walkers with prize money for leaders as well as 500 T-shirts.

A five kilometre fun run at 8 am makes this an event for the whole family and entries will be taken on Saturday from 2 pm to 5 pm and on race morning from 4 am. The race is also linked to the Sport and Recreation Department and the 1860 Diwali. Shamalen Gounden has more information on 084 581 9300.

Next Sunday’s Venk Pac 15 which was to be organised by Checkout Verulam Falcons has been cancelled. Sheila Persad can provide more details on 083 454 3625.
