Local archery phenomenon aims for Olympic glory

A DEDICATED Pietermaritzburg girl has taken the world of archery by storm, and is the only girl to have joined this year’s South African Junior Archery Squad.

Kauthar Mohamed (15) first discovered her love for archery at the age of 12. Her father, Moulana Mohamed, who is also an archer, decided to take her to the Pietermaritzburg Archery Club during her school holidays in 2012.

“They gave me a bow and arrow to shoot with, and I have never looked back,” she said.

Within three months of picking up a bow and arrow for the first time, Kauthar competed at the National Indoor Archery Championships and won.

Kauthar continued to bring home the gold each year since 2012 and is preparing for the next Indoor Championships this year in October.

She recently returned from the outdoor championships and brought home four trophies for her outstanding aim.

“From the beginning, my coach told me I had an archer’s form and a natural talent. This is my passion, and when I am shooting, it makes everyday stress evaporate,” she said.

“I am training for the 2020 Olympics and training is very intense. I train every single day and shoot 100 arrows every day.”

Her father said he was extremely proud of his daughter and supported her every step of the way.

“We are very excited about how well she has done. I took her to the archery club for the first time in 2012 and in less than three months she was standing on the podium as a winner in her category for the National Indoor Archery Championships. We are all very proud of her.”

Kauthar said although she worked hard academically at school, her dream was to make a full-time career out of archery.

She said archery was what she loved to do and after competing in the Olympics she would coach and train her own students to be the best archers they could be.
