Local coach Hammond succumbs to cancer

2011-12-24 00:00

WELL-KNOWN Pietermaritzburg and KZN midlands sports coach Tommy Hammond has died after a long fight with cancer.

A champion of the development of children through sport, Hammond coached a variety of sports in and around the city and the KZN midlands for decades.

A physical education teacher by profession and keenly interested in bringing sport into the lives of socio-economically disadvantaged children, Hammond and his team of coaches were active in the townships as well as the traditional sports schools.

A tireless fundraiser, his company, Tommy Hammond Sport, took PMB and midlands children on dozens of overseas tours as far afield as Australia and the United Kingdom.

A firm believer in the traditions and ethical values in sport, Hammond’s cricket teams were always complimented by their overseas hosts on their impeccable manners and appreciation of the sport’s history.

Despite the physical and emotional pain that would have felled lesser men years ago, Hammond shrugged off his illness and continued with his passion right till the end. He leaves his wife, Cindy, and children.

A memorial service will be held at 10 am Saturday at All Saints, 73 Montgomery Drive in Montrose.
