Local fashionista set to cause a stir

LOCAL fashion designer Nkosi Mhlungo can’t wait to blow everyone away with his pieces at the Golden Horse Casino Sprint Race Day fashion design competition on May 26.

“I am very excited about this,” said Mhlungo (26), who last year won the Most Striking Couple category for pieces he designed.

“I used old CDs for my the clothes I designed,” he added.

That was one of his many proud moments and he continues to make his mark in the fashion world.

Another exciting opportunity for him is showcasing some of his work at this year’s Durban July. This is a milestone for the young designer.

“I also designed an outfit for KZN male model Khulekani Khumalo, which he wore to the South African Music Awards early this month.

“That was a great achievement for me and it was very exciting. I am very proud of the work I have done so far.”

He has always been fascinated by fashion and pursuing a career in fashion has always been his dream.

“Fashion has always been a part of me, from a very young age. I used to get a lot of attention from people because of my unique style,” he said.

The fact that people paid attention to him made him realise that people wanted something different.

He decided to take his love for clothes to the next level and enrolled at PMB’s School of Fashion in 2010.

He completed his course in fashion design last year and moved to Durban early this year to join Morningside fashion boutique Angelique.

“I would really love to go far in the fashion world and hopefully own my own boutique one day,” he said.
