Local man wins R50?000 with non-stop SMSes

2013-03-11 00:00

IT was lights, camera, action for a Pietermaritzburg man who won R50 000 from Pepcell when his prize was delivered.

Ayanda Mthalane, an unemployed father of two, was paid a surprise visit at his Azalea home on Friday.

A Pepcell crew armed with cameras and accompanied by celebrities Tumi Masemola and Mandla Ndimande, of the City Ses’la comedy show, handed Mthalane an envelope and he opened it.

When he saw the amount, he declared : “The Lord has shown that he still loves me.

“I am over the moon as this money will help me a lot. I will pay for the education of my children and invest some of it so it can help me build my home.”

Mthalane told The Witness that he had sent text messages every day since he saw the competition advertised in the media.

“I was sending SMSes even during the night.”

His father, Lison Mthalane, said he was very happy for his son to have won the prize.

Lana Martens of Wired Communications said Mthalane was one of five winners around the country.

“We had two in Cape Town, two in Durban and one in Pietermaritzburg who are big winners. They won between R50 000 and R100 000.”
