Local media firm wins top award

ROBERT Inglis, director of Pietermaritzburg-based specialist multimedia company Jive Media, has won a prestigious National Science and Technology Award Forum award.

The award, sponsored by the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement — which promotes the understanding of science and technology in South Africa — is for “science communicator for public awareness over the last five years”.

The award went to Inglis for his “contribution to the development of the discipline of science communication through innovative and exciting media.”

The award acknowledges a book, The Maloti Drakensberg Experience, and the Mission MeerKAT comic series, both produced by Jive Media.

“The book came out of the Maloti Drakensberg Trans-Frontier Project between Lesotho and South Africa,” says Inglis. “We took five years of scientific research and turned it into a book, not only to make the science accessible but the region as well, so you will also find information on tourist attractions and places to stay.”

The Mission MeerKAT comics were produced for the Square Kilometre Array, a multinational science project aimed at creating a giant radio telescope.

“It will be one hundred times more powerful than any such radio telescope in existence today. Australia and New Zealand, as well as South Africa are hoping to be chosen as the site,” says Inglis.

The residents of Carnarvon (in the Karoo), near the proposed site of the telescope, are worried about “radiation” from the telescope, and the comics were designed to allay these fears. — WR.
