Local pitch gets R4 mln upgrade

2008-06-04 00:00

The joint R4,25-million venture between Msunduzi Municipality and FNB to upgrade Wadley Stadium in Edendale has been completed and an official opening will be marked by a match between the South African and Zimbabwe under-17 teams.

Wadley Stadium’s pitch has been relaid with an artificial one that conforms to Fifa’s 2010 World Cup standards. Strategic executive manager for community services and social equity, Zwe Hulane, said activities to mark the re-opening will start tomorrow with a visit to two local schools by 2010 Soccer World Cup ambassadors, former Bafana Bafana stars Doctor Khumalo, Phil Masinga, former Banyana Banyana captain, Desiree Ellis and members of the Local Organising Committee (LOC).

“Residents should own this development. We’ve said … that we want residents to benefit from the projects aimed at 2010 before and after the World Cup,” Hulane said.

Bragging about the upgrade, Msunduzi mayor, Zanele Hlatshwayo, said that it is the first 2010 Soccer World Cup legacy project in KwaZulu-Natal.

Hlatshwayo said it will empower the youth after 2010 and they must utilise it because it is for them.

Hlatshwayo will cut the ribbon on Sunday with the chairman of the LOC, Irvin Khoza, to mark the official opening.
