Local school adds an Italian twist to new computer lab

A LOCAL school sang South Africa’s national anthem to an Italian school yesterday via Skype in their new computer lab.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was also held at Northlands Primary School during a special assembly to thank their sponsors for the equipment to run their new lab.

During a cross-over Skype call to Italy between Porta Vela Vila, a school in Italy, and Northlands Primary, pupils from the local school communicated with the Italians and sang their national anthems for each other.

Northlands Primary School principal Vishnu Naidoo said: “This is now part of our school curriculum where pupils will do their research projects and homework using the lab,” he said.

Sponsor Give IT Back spokesperson, Jonathan Michael told The Witness that when he grew up he never had a computer.

“As an entrepreneur I needed to do something to improve other people’s lives. It makes a difference if a business actually represents something, but not just making money,” said Michael.

The school also prides itself for being the first school to teach five languages, including Italian, in the country.

“The Italian class includes teaching pupils Italian songs, simple words such as greetings and playing games the Italian way,” said Simona Conti, an assistant of Graziella Maggesi, who conducts their Italian lessons.

“The knowledge of the pupils in this school will improve,” said mother Rachel Vadivelu, watching her daughter Angeli Dawo play a mathematics computer game.
