Local sportspeople launch veterans’ association

2010-08-10 00:00

A VETERANS’ Sports Association was formed at a well-attended meeting at Allandale Primary School recently to honour veteran sports personalities in the city and northern Natal.

These men and women — from the days when, according to anecdotes at the meeting, winning a football match could earn players between R5 and R15 and where a sangoma would be consulted on the eve of a game — have attained provincial and national honours in all codes of sport, irrespective of colour or creed.

The eight-man committee to steer the association includes Ismail Bhamjee, Bryan Rupram and veteran sports administrator Babs Seethapersadh. Veterans Mike Raman, John Moodley, Rama Moodley, Jugoo Govender, Sam Pillay, Parker Cassimjee, Kista Pillay, Sitham Moodliar, Nadir Shah,Terrance Hoskins attended the meeting.

A function is to be organised at the Royal Showgrounds later this year.
