Local teen rugby tackles alleged robber after chase

2013-12-02 00:00

A HILLCREST High School pupil found himself using his first team rugby tackling skills on a suspected robber.

Callum Borthwick (18) had just picked up his girlfriend, Laura White (18), after a matric exam at Hillcrest High on Friday, November 15, and after doing some shopping, they were returning home. “I wasn’t driving the usual route,” said Borthwick. “I was showing Laura my running route. When we came into Ridge Road we saw Blue Security technicians chasing some guys. It was quite hectic.”

Borthwick stopped the car and the couple saw one of the men jump over a gate into a nearby garden. They also saw Precious Ngcobo, a cleaner at Hillcrest High, walking along the road, clearly distressed. “She was traumatised and we tried to calm her down,” says White. “She had been mugged and had two cellphones, including a new touch phone, stolen.”

While the two teenagers were with Ngcobo, the man who had jumped the gate reappeared, trying to escape from an irate homeowner. “We heard the house’s owner shouting and the suspect came out of the property over the gate,” says Borthwick. “I ran and tackled him and got him into a ditch near the fence.”

According to White, Ngcobo kept saying: “It’s him. It’s him”.

A passer-by in a car stopped and called the police. Shortly afterwards, representatives of Blue Security, Enforce and Securelink arrived on the scene. They were later joined by the SAPS.

Ngcobo, Borthwick, White and the suspect were taken to Hillcrest police station. No statements were taken though the suspect was interrogated and the police said he claimed to be innocent, and he had been in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Borthwick returned later to make a statement and was told he must provide the registration number of the stolen phone before they could take a statement. Why this should be a condition was not made clear. Borthwick says he was told by a police officer that the case had not been dropped. According to a SAPS spokesperson, however, no related incident was registered at Hillcrest police station on November 15.
