Local youth wins Volcom VQS finals

2013-06-07 00:00

SLADE Prestwich (18) looks set to become another Durban surfing prodigy in the near future.

He’s made his intentions clear by winning the Volcom VQS Global finals in four- to five-foot surf at Fiji’s Cloudbreak surfing spot, beating eight surfers from around the world to top spot.

Comfortably winning the qualifying event in Durban, Prestwich joined surfers from Australia, the U.S., Brazil, France, Peru, Puerto Rico, New Zealand and Japan to take on the Fijian surf. A regular-footer, Prestwich impressed the judges with big turns and precision barrel riding to edge out Brazil’s Deivid Silva for the title. He pocketed an impressive $10 000 (R100 000), his biggest paycheque to date.

Prestwich has his sights on next year’s Pro Tour and after his win in Fiji, will spend a few days catching fellow South Africans Jordy Smith and Travis Logie in the elite Volcom Fiji Pro. It’s been hard work for Prestwich, who has managed to secure sponsorship since he was 12, backed by Quiksilver. The brand’s head of marketing, Dane Patterson, said: “Slade has raised the bar in the last few months. He has massive talent and his training and dedication are starting to reap rewards.”

Prestwich’s next target is the Vans Pro Junior at Huntington Beach in the U.S.
